Natural gas transmission has become an incredibly important industry, but just how long has it been around? Well, the Freedonia (NY) Gas Light Company is generally credited with installing the first commercial gas pipeline in the US around 1858, a crude contraption fashioned from hollowed logs, tar and rags. But if you want to trace the true roots of the "midstream" business you have to go farther back...a lot farther, all the way to 500 B.C. That's right , 2500 years ago the Chinese ran bamboo pipelines from inland natural gas seeps to the coast in order to boil seawater for the production of salt brine and drinking water. Imagine the dp in those systems! Not even wise old Confucius could have predicted the astounding results of those humble beginnings.
